All traditional first year students are required to live in university housing. Residential Life is dedicated to working with Northeastern students to help them build strong community living environments that support personal development and academic success.
Is housing guaranteed at Northeastern?
You are guaranteed housing for Fall 2021. Because so many Northeastern students participate in study abroad or co-op opportunities outside of the Boston area, or secure off-campus housing, we can anticipate a number of cancellations and manage available space through PAWS.
How does Northeastern housing lottery work?
For those unfamiliar with the process, students are randomly assigned a number with a corresponding date and time during which they can choose where they want to live. The higher number you have, the later you are able to pick your housing, thus leaving you with the least-desired housing options.
Can you live off campus freshman year at Northeastern?
Students who do not live in university housing are considered off-campus students. Off Campus Housing and Support Services offer information, resources, and materials regarding off-campus student living.
Do you pick a roommate at Northeastern?
While there are college affiliated LLC’s students in that college are not required to choose those LLCs, and alternatively students in other majors could choose a different college affiliate LLC if they wish. If you have a friend you would like to live with, you can create a roommate group in your housing application!
Can you request roommates at Northeastern?
Yes, the Housing Application provides you with the opportunity to request a roommate. In order to be a confirmed roommate match, students must form a completed roommate group. Please know, however, that confirmed roommate requests are not guaranteed, as we will have limited open double rooms.

Note that all requests must be mutual. requesting a roommate. accommodate roommate groups. While we recommend keeping your group to 2 students, no roommate group is guaranteed to be placed in the same room, suite, and/or apartment.

Northeastern University is proud to offer All Gender Housing to all of our residential students (first-year, returning students, graduate and law). The All Gender Housing policy can be found here. Within the Housing Application, select that you are interested in All Gender Housing.
Can u pick your roommate at Northeastern?
If you have a friend you would like to live with, you can create a roommate group in your housing application! LLC’s are then assigned to buildings after the application deadline in order to assign as many students to their top choice LLC.
