PROTOPIC Ointment is a prescription medicine used on the skin (topical) to treat eczema (atopic dermatitis). PROTOPIC Ointment is in a class of medicines called topical calcineurin inhibitors. It is for adults and children 2 years of age and older who do not have a weakened immune system.
Can I use Protopic on my child?
Only Protopic 0.03 % ointment should be used in children from the age of 2 to 16 years. Protopic ointment should not be used in children aged below 2 years until further data are available. Protopic ointment should be applied as a thin layer to affected or commonly affected areas of the skin.

The pooled results from three pharmacokinetic studies in 88 adult atopic dermatitis patients indicate that tacrolimus is minimally absorbed after the topical application of Protopic ® Ointment.
Is Protopic safe for long term use?
Long-term safety of Protopic (tacrolimus 0.1% ointment) is not known. Lymphoma, skin cancer, and other types of cancer have rarely happened in people treated with Protopic (tacrolimus 0.1% ointment). It is not known if Protopic (tacrolimus 0.1% ointment) caused this effect.
Can I use Protopic on a child under 16?
If you are using Protopic on a child younger than 16 years old, use only the 0.03% ointment. The 0.1% ointment is for adults and children who are at least 16 years old, but is too strong to use on younger children.
