What is the sleeve of a record called?
A record sleeve (not to be conflated with a record jacket/cover) is the outer covering of a vinyl record. Alternative terms are dust sleeve and album liner.
Do records need outer sleeves?
Outer sleeves protect the album’s jacket, so you can better preserve the cover art and prevent the cardboard from getting damaged. No matter the material or the size, they should be thick enough for protection against dust and scratches, but thin enough to prevent snagging when slid into the jacket.
Can you fix scratches on records?
Apply a thin line of epoxy or wood glue to the scratched area. Use a toothpick to ease into the crack and allow time for it to seep in thoroughly. If there are multiple scratches, apply glue to the entire record as it spins on your turntable.
What is the standard size of a record sleeve?
The size of the typical cardboard LP sleeve cover is 12.375 in (31.43 cm) square. Starting in the mid-1990s, the compact disc (CD) was the most common form of physically-distributed music products.
Are inner sleeves necessary?
When you’re putting your vinyl records away, using an intact inner sleeve is critical to its preservation. When records are slipped back into their album covers without a sleeve, they collect dust and static, and are more likely to scratch, crack, and split.
Are paper sleeves bad for vinyl?
While this is certainly better than no protection at all, the paper can tear and does shed over time. Also, the simple act of sliding a record into and out of these paper sleeves scratches records, creates static and paper dust. Paper sleeves are not a good long term storage option for records.
